Northwood Encourages Parent Involvement
Join Northwood's team of volunteers and help make a difference! Remember, every little bit helps, and there is something for every interest and level of participation. Parent volunteers are the backbone of our school. Volunteering is a great way to get involved, develop a closer relationship with your child and establish friendships. You may help out in the classroom in a variety of ways, in the office, or by helping with PFC activities. Volunteers are needed throughout the school year and especially at fundraising events. By being active in whatever way suits your talents and time, you send a powerful message to your child that school is important to you! Please GET INVOLVED NOW, and make a difference.

Classroom Volunteers
One of the best ways you can support your child’s immediate learning environment is by helping his or her teacher coordinate within the classroom. In this role, you are helping the teacher as well as Northwood Elementary School. Responsibilities vary from classroom to classroom, but typically center on being a point person for the teacher. Examples of instances might include: gathering phone numbers & email lists of classmates, checking homework, assisting with field trips, organizing supplies, etc.
This is a good role for someone who likes to be in touch with the teacher and the classroom. It involves some checking in with teachers (usually before or after school) and occasional follow up with fellow class families.
Library Volunteers
Parents can help in the library by providing reading enrichment experiences, shelving books, reading and straightening shelves, or helping put up library displays. Additionally, you can support Northwood's Scholastic Book Fair by helping to set up, tear down and assist students with their selections and purchases. Proceeds from the book and items purchased from the book fair allow us to continue to update the reading collection in the library so your child is interested in the reading materials we have to offer. For more information about volunteering in the LMC, send an email to Keri Murdock.
Event Volunteers
Northwood is always in need of volunteers for events throughout the school year. Here are just a few:
- Campus Cleanup
- Carnival
- Field Day
- Read-a-thon
- Jog-a-thon
Parent Faculty Club (PFC)
All parents of Northwood Elementary School students are members of our PFC. There is no membership fee. Board meetings are held monthly and all are invited to attend. General meetings are held in the fall at Back to School Night and at the end of the year. The PFC organizes many activities for NES students and runs a number of fundraisers. Volunteer workers are always needed.
School Site Council
The School Site Council is made up of elected parents, teachers, and other staff. Its role is to manage and monitor progress on the School Based Coordinated Plan and to oversee the use of School Improvement funds. The council meets monthly. All interested parents and staff are invited to attend.
Parent Teacher Conference
Conferences are held in the middle of October for all students on two minimum days and one staff work day. Attending your child's conference is critical to forming a partnership with the teacher, sharing any special needs of your child, and learning how to best support your child's learning in the home. At other times of the year, schedule conferences with your child's teacher, as needed.
