Come see The Secret Garden!

Northwood students will be performing the musical version of "The Secret Garden" this Saturday, January 25th, at Vintage High School's little theater. Shows are at 3:00 and 5:30 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. They are available in the office or at the door. Cash will be accepted as well as checks made out to "Northwood PFC". Northwood Halloween Parade

All of our little ghosts, goblins, princesses and superheroes will be strutting their stuff in the Halloween parade at a new time. If students chose to wear a costume for the parade, they should arrive to school wearing it. Parents are welcome to stay for the parade. Please park in the surrounding neighborhood and/or walk as the parking lot will be crowded.

Congratulations to Northwood students for scoring highest in science on the CST for all of Napa elementary schools with 75% of all 5th graders being proficient or advanced.

The first day of school (8/14) is right around the corner.  Please join us on Saturday, August 10th 8:00-12:00 for a campus beautification work day.  We have a big list of washing, painting and planting to do, but many hands make light work!  Please bring work gloves if you have them and email if you can donate some snacks for our hard workers.

The Race for Education

The 3rd annual "Race for Education event and festival is on May 19th. You can register for the 5K or 10K run/walk & festival OR just the festival at www.napafit.com/race.

A $1000 grant will be awarded to the high school with the most registrants, the Middle School with the most registrants and the Elementary School with the most registrants.

Northwood students will be taking part, like thousands around the world, in walking to school with the help from Napa County Safe Routes to School.  Our students will get the chance to help reduce traffic congestion around our school, as well as get some quality exercise, in joining together to walk to school.

Northwood Wins Battle of the Books!

Congratulations to The Bookworms (Sara H., Stephanie G., Vanessa G. & Fiona H.) and Amanda M. (who filled in during the championship battle) for winning the district-wide Battle of the Books competition on May 29th. Battle of the Books is a reading competition in which teams of four read ten chapter books then answer reading comprehension questions. Baby Toads at Alston

This morning I took a walk at Alston and realized it was that time of the year again when baby toads are making their journey!  It's quite the sight to see! Hundreds, if not thousands, of baby toads can be seen hopping/walking through the brush and across the paths.  When I say "baby" I mean they are teenie, tiny!  The photo to the right shows one of the tiniest ones I found.  It was about the size of the tip of my pinkie finger.  Tiny!!!

Book Fair Volunteers Needed!

We are in need of volunteers to help with the book fair.  We really need 3-4 volunteers per day to make this fair successful. So far I have 2 volunteers on Monday and 1 on Thursday, so that leaves many slots to fill.

The times needed are: Mon 5/14, Tue 5/15, & Thur 5/17 2:30-3:30 and Wed. 5/16 12:45-1:45.

Children UNDER 8 years of age still need to be in their boosters (restrained) in the back seat when riding in any motor vehicle (Car/Truck/Van, etc.) That means through your 7th Birthday until your 8th Birthday. Make & Decorate: Marshmallow Snowman

These were a blast to make!  And easy, too!

You'll need
:
3 marshmallows (regular or jumbo) - We used jumbo!
12" of ribbon
7 toothpicks
Orange, brown and black markers
3 sequins or small buttons
Glue

1. Press 2 toothpicks halfway into the top of one marshmallow.  Next, press another marshmallow on top of the toothpicks.  Repeat for the top marshmallow.
2. Glue 3 sequins or buttons onto the side of the middle marshmallow.
3. Cut a ribbon approximately 12" and tie between the middle and top marshmallow.

We've recently had a couple incidences where children and even parents have come close to getting injured during morning drop-off. Please be sure to look in all directions before moving your vehicle. Rock n Roll Jog-a-Thon Today

Today, Northwood students ran laps from 9am to 10am to help raise money for our school. Each student donned their blue and gold Jog-a-Thon t-shirts and set off to jog as many laps as possible in the time allotted. Rock and roll music roared over the field to get the energy up and keep the kids jogging towards their goal. Thank you to all the parents, teachers and staff for volunteering and helping us put together a fantastic fund raising event!

Baggie Explosion

This outside experiment will have your child cheering for more! Pour 1 cup of vinegar into a baggie with zipper closure. Tear a small square (3"x3") and place 2 tablespoons of baking soda in the center of the square. Fold the paper towel into a smaller square, enclosing the baking soda. Go outside! Place the baggie on the ground, drop the baking soda square into the baggie and zip the baggie closed. Step back and watch what happens!

Color Changing Milk

Have some fun with this science experiment found on www.stevespanglerscience.com.

Materials You'll Need:

Milk (whole or 2%)
Large plate
Food coloring
Cotton swabs
Dish detergent (e.g. Dawn)
  1. Pour enough milk in the dinner plate to completely cover the bottom. Allow the milk to settle.
  2. Add one drop of each of the four colors of food coloring - red, yellow, blue, and green - to the milk. Keep the drops close together in the center of the plate of milk.

Today was our annual Field Day. The children had a blast! There were many activities available for children to test their skills. Besides the jumbo jumpy house and huge parachute, children also got to run relay races, potatoe bag races, three-legged race, and tug-o-war. There was a lot of silliness at the water activities! Ask any ScientificKid, "What is owl puke?" and they can tell you all about it! In our After School Enrichment program, ScientificKids, the children learned all about owls and their diet. We used forceps to pick apart owl pellets and found lots of bones! We even found a rat's skull!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring break! It was very relaxing, but I'm glad to be back. This week, the ASE programs started. The word around campus is our kids are really enjoying them! There was some very cool building going on in the Pre-engineering with Legos class. On Wednesday, the Kinders learned how to play kickball, and we looked at worms in ScientificKids. I heard a lot of "wow", "that's so cool" and "ew". We had a fabulous time!

The children at Northwood not only did a fabulous job reading lots of books for the Hooked on Books Read-a-Thon, but they also exceeded the 375,000 minutes goal!!! A total of 379,921 minutes were read by our students, and over $10,000 were raised in pledges! Mr. Neidhoefer said he would kiss a fish if the children met or exceeded the goal of 375,000 minutes. Well, that's just what he did! He puckered up and kissed a very smelly, ugly fish! Yuck!

Benefit Concert for Haiti

On Saturday, February the 20th there will be a benefit concert in Yountville for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. This is a great opportunity as a community to come together and show our support for the victims and their families during such tragic times. As part of the Read-a-thon activities, the PFC is sponsoring a Family Read in Night tonight beginning at 6pm. Bring a blanket or pillow for floor seating, wear comfortable clothing or even PJ's. Great stoires will be read by Cal Fire firefighters, and author Hilary Homzie.

Hilary will be reading from her books and signing copies that will be on sale at the event. Her books can be purchased for $4-6.

We've just added a new feature to our website - Lost & Found. Now you can check our Lost & Found bin online instead of coming to the school and digging through piles of items! Regularly, new lost and found items will be pictured on the website. Please check the page often. Any items not claimed by a specified date will be donated to the needy. The current items in our bin will be donated to the people of Haiti if unclaimed by February 19th.

2nd Annual Spelling Bee

On January 28th, Northwood's 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students competed in our 2nd annual spelling bee, which is a part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition. The first round of the competition began in the classrooms. Then the four best spellers in each of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades were selected to compete in the Northwood's 2nd annual spelling bee.

Get "Hooked on Books" at Northwood!

Northwood gets hooked on books during the month of February! On Friday, reading log packets went home with the students to be used for logging minutes read. Each week, students will return their reading log sheets to collect the "minutes read" prizes.

What counts as minutes read? Reading books, homework, magazines, newspapers, comics. It includes children reading to others and others reading to the children.

Help Haiti Heal - Donate Your Shoes!

A massive, 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti near the capital of Port-au-Prince on Tuesday, January 12th. The damage to buildings is extensive and the number of injured or dead is astounding. They need our help!

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2010-2011 school year will begin on Monday, February 1, 2010, at your neighborhood school. Children must be 5 years old on or before December 2, 2010 in order to qualify for kindergarten.

Bow Wow for Books

Come join the fun at the Napa Main Library! Elementary school age readers are invited to read to a certified listening dog. The dogs are great listeners and provide an inviting environment for children to practice their reading skills. Children sign up for a 15 minute session when they arrive at the library. Children may select a book from our collection or bring one from home or school.

Come see The Secret Garden!

Northwood students will be performing the musical version of "The Secret Garden" this Saturday, January 25th, at Vintage High School's little theater. Shows are at 3:00 and 5:30 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. They are available in the office or at the door. Cash will be accepted as well as checks made out to "Northwood PFC".
